| the famous japanese gardner Rikyu designed a tea garden for a temple. The garden had a beautiful view overlooking the ocean. He placed two hedges near the water basin that a visitor would use to wash his hands during the ceremony. The hedges blocked the view of the sea except when the visitor bent over to wash his hands. Rikyu intended that a contemplative visitor, when using the basin might 'see this mind reflected within its small compass and so epitomized. Then, looking up and suddenly catching a glimpse of the splendid infinitude of the ocean the viewer could realize, in its relationship to the bit of water in the basin, that man is likewise a bit of the Infinite, the same in substance and spirit.' —Loraine Kuck | |
